Tutorial Resources

Step 1

Before you start, download all the material in one place. So it will be easier to work with them. Open Photoshop and start by creating! Create a new document. Go to File > New or the short key Cmd /Ctrl+ N. A blank document with size of 3000 pixels wide and 2000 pixels high. I named the document “Scandinavians”.

image2

Step 2

Now I have added a picture of the landscape. Go to File > Place and select the image of the landscape.

image3

This picture is the foundation and it makes sense to frame for the proper construction of the composition. So it will be easier to work on photo manipulation. At the end of the work, we will remove it.

image4

Step 3

After addition of the landscape, then stretch, as shown in Figure. When you put the picture it automatically in the transformation. But if not, transform the landscape, press the short key Cmd /Ctrl+ T or go to Edit > Transform > Scale. Pull the black cubes in the corners formed frame.

image5

Resize the picture so that it will cover the whole workspace and go beyond the edges of the document. Do not worry about losing quality. Picture has the function of the skeleton and the quality is not particularly necessary.

image6

Step 4

Now let’s start creating our main landscape. Create a new group clicking on the icon of the group in the Layers palette and name it “land”.

image7

Step 5

Let’s start creating photo manipulation with water. Put in work photo landscape with fog. Go to File > Place and select the image of the landscape with fog.

image8

Now set the settings for this window as shown in the figure. Apply the settings press Ok.

Step 67

Then click on the icon mask to remove the background.

image84

Reduce crow. Go to Edit > Transform > Scale or the short key Cmd/Ctrl+ T.  Then place it as shown in the figure.

image85

Step 68

Now you need to route the light and shadow. Create a new layer use the short key Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift+ N and set the settings as shown in the figure.

image86

Step 69

Using the Dodge Tool (O) and Burn Tool (O) Draw light and shadow. Try to make the contrast of the image.

image87

Note the model. You need to change the lighting of her dress she seemed realistic.

Change the size of tools depending on what you are doing. Settings for both instruments shown in Figure

image88

So I made the light and shadow.

image89

Step 70

Now let us work on the effects of light and do more even mountains near the water. Continue to start a little ledge to make similarity harbor. Create a new layer in a group “Land”.

image90

Select Clone Stamp Tool (S) in toolbar and select in image mountains green part, holding Alt.

image91

Step 71

Go the created layer and start painting the mountains continued. Draw a stiff brush because the landscape has the precise form cannot be blurred.

image92

Step 72

Now duplicate the adjustment layer from the mountains (the short key Cmd/Ctrl+ J), which we cloned and place it above the layer with the bay.

image93

Do not worry if you change a little picture in color. Just when you put all the layers on the right places, you check that the adjustment layers applied only to the necessary layers, rather than the entire document. To apply an adjustment layer to the desired layer hold Alt and click on layer.

Step 73

Create a new layer and do all the same, but now with the water. Nothing complicated just a little neatly. Layer must be above the water layer in the bay.

image94

Step 74

That’s how I came up.

image95

Step 75

Now create the light rays. Create a new layer in a group “Land”.

image96

Select Polygonal Lasso Tool (L).

image97

Step 76

Now make a selection as shown in the figure. Importantly it is part circle of the sky where the light show.

image98

image99

Fill the selection with white color.

image100

Step 77

Select Brush Tool (B) on the toolbar. Set it to the following settings: Size: 25px. Hardness: 0% Opacity: 50% flow: 100%. Set the color # 4a4a4a. Draw a line as shown in the figure. Do not worry, and paint on the edges of selection, because the brush will not draw outside the selection.

image101

Step 78

Now click Ctrl + D to deselect and apply a blur filter. For do this go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur…

image102

Make the settings as shown in Figure.

image103

Step 79

Select Brush Tool (B) on the toolbar. Set it to the following settings: Size: 65px. Hardness: 0% Opacity: 30% flow: 100%. Now add a mask to this layer and remove the excess as shown in Figure. image104

Step 80

Now create a new layer and add a fog on the mountain. Select Brush Tool (B) on the toolbar. Set it to the following settings: Size: 65px. Hardness: 0% Opacity: 30% flow: 100%. Set the color # a8acb1

image105

Step 81

Proceed to the final part of our image. Need to create a harsh atmosphere in this part of the tutorial we will deal adjustment layers. First adjustment layer is Selective Color…
Click on the Layers palette on icon adjustment layers and in the list, select Selective Color…

image106

Set the settings as shown in Figure.

image107

Step 82

Next adjustment layer is Curves… Need to make blue and green channels to bright and deep

image108

Set the points as shown in Figure.

image109

Step 83

Next adjustment layer is Solid Color… We fill the background of color. Go to Layer > New Full Layer > Solid Color… Do not change the settings to and agree with the creation of a new layer and set the color # 495cbf

image110

Then, in the Layers palette, set the layer opacity 42%.

image111

Step 84

Next adjustment layer is Gradient (Gradient full)… We fill the background of color. Go to Layer > New Full Layer > Gradient … Do not change the settings to and agree with the creation of a new layer.image112

Now change the style on Radial and set angle: 180. Click on the gradient to get into detailed settings.

image113

Set the very first version of the gradient, change color for him. To change the color, click on the square with the color. For the right set the color # 0e1406, for the left set the color # 90ac60. When finished, click Ok.

image114

Then, in the Layers palette, set the layer opacity 50%.

image115

Step 85

Next adjustment layer is Curves… Need to make blue and red channels deep. This gives naturalness atmosphere.

image116

Set the points as shown in Figure for red and blue channels.

image117

Step 86

Image was a little green, so I added to the balance of the ink color.

Next adjustment layer is Solid Color… We fill the background of color. Go to Layer > New Full Layer > Solid Color… Do not change the settings and agree with the creation of a new layer, and set the color # 28337a.

image118

Then, in the Layers palette, set the layer opacity 30%.

image119

Step 87

Now select the first and last layers with the SHIFT key held and combine them in a group (the short key Cmd /Ctrl+ G).

image120

Add a layer mask to this group. Select Brush Tool (B) on the toolbar. Set it to the following settings: Size: 400px. Hardness: 0% Opacity: 30% flow: 100%.

image121

Step 88

Remove color from the mountains, and the ships of the sky as shown in the figure.

image122

Step 89

Here is ready to work with all layers. I hope you enjoyed working on this photo manipulation!

How to Create an Emotional Soft-Tone Photo Manipulation

Create this emotional blue-tone photo manipualtion of a woman in a forest with flying petals. This tutorial uses few resources and will show you how to use techniques such as dodging and burning to create a dramatic look.

Tutorial Resources

Step 1 – The Background

Open the Background and cut the part you’re interested in.

step-001[3]

We want to give more visibility to the subject, so let’s apply some blur here. Duplicate the background layer and add Gaussian Blur.

(Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur)

The amount depends on the picture, it’s not always the same. (I generally use a range between 5px and 10px)

step-002[3]

This step is optional. It depends on your taste!

Duplicate the blurred background and set the blend mode to Multiply. Play with Opacity and Fill because sometimes Multiply blend gives the picture too much darkness. (In this case I left both at 100%).

step-003[3]

Step 2 – The Lady

Open the stock with the lady and extract her.

step-004[3]

Create a new layer above the background layers and put there the lady. I previously worked on hair and skin but we’re not here for that! You can easily find tutorials about hair and skin.

step-005[3]

Create a layer between the lady and the background and paint some hair (I suggest you a little hard brush). In alternative you can download some strands stock and place them in the layer you created. When you’re done just smudge the part that is under the dress of the lady.

step-006[3]

Below you can see the result.

step-007[3]

Step 3 – Petals

Create a new layer above everything. Download the PSD containing the petals and paste them into this layer. Put them in the position you like.

Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment level just for the petals layer (with ALT button) and set the Lightness at -30 because they have too brightness.

Now we want they seem to fall. We can achieve that result with blur. (Filter > Blur > Motion Blur). Amount can vary. It depends on how big is the resolution and on your taste.

step-008[2]

Step 4 – Diamondsw

Create a new layer above the petals layer and with the diamonds brush paint some of them with white color. They have a lot of opacity so duplicate this layer 3 times and merge all 4 layers in one.

step-009[1]

As you can see the brush will paint a lot of diamonds. So delete the ones you don’t want and put the remaining like they are falling from her hand.

step-010[1]

Step 5 – Shadows

It’s time to shading! Add a Curve Adjustment layer above everything and drag the curve down like the image below. I set these values: Input 169 and Output 100. Set this layer to Multiply.

Everything will be darker but we don’t want this effect on the whole manipulation! So add a Mask to this level and fill it with black or, in alternative, go to Masks (the button close the Adjustments) and click the button Invert. The manipulation will turn as it was before, like you did nothing.

Now with a white soft brush paint over the black mask and the darkness will appear where you brush. You can now choose where shadows go! I use a brush with low opacity and flow (generally 30% for both, it depends on the areas to paint).

step-011[1]

Below you can see so far where I painted the shadows.

step-013[1]

Step 6 – Dodge & Burn

Create a new layer and set it to Overlay.

Go to: Edit > Fill > 50% Gray

On this layer you can now Burn and Dodge the areas you want to be darker or lighter.

My settings are: Range: For shadows 90% of the times is midtones. With lights it’s the same but sometimes, if you want more glowing lights you can also use the range Highlights. Exposure between 10% and 30%.

Use especially the Dodge on the diamonds, the highlights of her skin and the dress.

Below you can see where I dodged and burned.

step-014[1]

This is the result.

step-015[1]

Step 7 – Texture

Create a new layer and a texture like this (with a soft round brush). Set the layer to Soft Light

step-016[1]

This is the result.

step-018[1]

Step 8 – Light

Let’s add some light! Pick one of the lightest color from background (not white, I chose #e1f9ff). With a round hard brush paint something like a did in the picture below.

step-019[1]

Now apply some blur to completely dissolve it.

(Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) (Sometimes I need 250px to achieve this effect)

step-020[1]

Step 9 – Final Adjustments

I think the picture is too much saturated. So Add a Hue/Sat Adjustments Layer and set the Saturation to -70 (You can choose the amount you want)

step-021[1]

Highlights. Create a new layer. Set the brush Mode to Overlay (Opacity and Flow vary, I generally set 30%). With a light color from the background paint some highlights. I did it on the red areas I’m showing you here.

step-022[1]

This is the result.

step-023[1]

Let’s create a Vignette. Create a new layer. Pick a dark color from the background and paint on the edges of the manipulation. Set the layer to Soft Light (Opacity and Fill 80%) and add a bit of Gaussian Blur if you want.

step-024[1]

step-025[1]

Let’s add a bit of contrast so that Lights and Shadows will be more interesting.

Create a Curve adjustment layer and set the Medium Contrast from the Preset Curves. On the white mask of this layer paint with a black brush on th face of the lady because it would be too dark. Set the layer to Luminosity and the Opacity to 70%.

step-026[1]

Step 35

On new layer, draw #ff9b27 strands. It will be looking like lights from wings.

Step 36

Add layer. Take soft big brush (40px) #290f00 color. Draw some strokes on model’s face and hair. Then change blending mode to multiply.

Step 37

Again you should work on glow. Choose 100px brush #f7941d color (60% opacity) and draw strokes on wings and model’s skin, then change blending mode to linear dodge

Tutorial Resources

Step 1 – Create A New Document

Create a new document with the following attribute : Width 1920 – Height 1200 | Background Contents : Transparent.

elune 1

Step 2 – Extract The Forest

Open the Forest stock image. As you can see we want to create a mystic and dark piece so we can’t leave the bright sky like this, so we will get rid of it instead of trying to turn it dark. Select all the image with Ctrl + A then go to Select -> Color Range…

Hold Shift and left click on the sky part of the image until all the forest part are turned to black. You can adjust the Fuzziness for more accurate selection but I recommend keeping it below 80, as keeping high Fuzziness will cause Photoshop to select unnecessary part.

elune 2

With the help of Color Range the forest has been extracted easily. This tool is a great choice for extracting detailed composition such as forest, trees, hair.

elune 2a

Step 3 – From Day to Night

Bring the extracted forest into our document. Resize it like the image below.

elune 3

Begin adding this chain of Adjustment Layers to the forest. Remember to tick Create Clipping Mask on those adjustment layers so that they will only affect on the forest layer.

Brightness/Contrast -> Levels -> Black&White -> Photo Filter.

elune 3aelune 3b

elune 3celune 3d

And here is the result :

elune 3e

Step 4

We need to add some extra shadow in order to fully turn our forest into a dark forest. Create a new layer, grab a soft brush with Black color and paint on these parts

elune 4

Switch the Blend Mode to Soft Light and low down the Opacity to 75%

elune 4a

Step 5

Dark blue is the main theme we want for our piece so we will begin to fill in the base color for the forest. Go to Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Solid Color then choose the color #4273b0, change the Blend Mode to Color with 77% Opacity, 78% Fill. By this simple step the forest will be blended with a nice dark blue color.

elune 5

Add some Layer Mask to the Solid Color layer as some parts turned way too much blue than we needed.

elune 5a

Step 6 – Adding Base Fog

Download the Fog Brush in the Resources list, open it and grab any fog brush you want and start painting.

elune 6

elune 6a

Layer Mask on these fog layers as we only want some subtle fog effect to spice up the atmosphere of the image.

elune 6b

elune 6c

Reduce the fog layer Opacity and Fill to 45%. The number can be changed as you desire, depends on how strong you want the fog to be.

elune 6d

Step 7 – Extracting The Model

Open the Model stock photo and start extracting her, you can use Quick Selection Tool to do so as the photo’s quality is high and the contrast is enough for Quick Selection Tool to do its work. Otherwise you can use Pen Tool for a better result but more time-consuming, its up to you!

Place the model into our document after you’ve done the extracting.

elune 7

Step 8 – First Model Blending Process

Access to the Model’s Blending Option -> Inner Shadow and adjust the attribute like this :

elune 8

Continue adding these following adjustment layers :

Curves -> Brightness/Contrast -> Photo Filter -> Color Balance -> Exposure

elune 8aelune 8b

elune 8delune 8e

elune 8felune 8g

And here is the result :

elune 8h

Step 9 – Adding Shadow To The Model’s Legs

We will use the same method we just did with the forest to the model’s legs in this step. Reduce the Opacity to 31%.

elune 9

Step 10

As you can see the Model’s base lightning is not really fit with our image. Normally it would take many adjustment layers to fix this but the result won’t be good. With this step I will show you this good trick to adjust the lightning as you want with the help of Dodge and Burn Tool.

First you need to create a new layer and fill it with 50% Gray. Do so by hit Ctrl + A to select the layer, right click on the screen and choose Fill -> 50% Gray. Create Clipping Mask on the Model layer.

elune 10

Grab the Dodge and Burn Tool, keep the setting as Midtone with 12% Exposure. Start painting on the model. Notice that the light source we will create later will come from the top so use the Dodge Tool to highlight the parts where the light sources will possibly touch the model, and Burn Tool to darken the other parts.

As in the image, red arrows indicate where to use Burn Tool, blue arrows indicate where to use Dodge Tool.

elune 10a

Change the Blend Mode to Overlay and see the result!

elune 10b

Step 11 – Adding The Sky

Place the Sky stock photo into our document, behind the forest.

elune 11

Add the Curves adjustment layer to the sky.

elune 11a

elune 11b

Step 12

Open the Dead Tree 1 stock photo and select this specific part. Use Color Range to extract it as we did with the forest in step 2. This is a very good chance to try out this tool.

elune 12

elune 12b

Step 13

Place the extracted dead tree behind the model.

elune 13

We don’t want those white pixels remain on the dead tree so we will seek the help of Refine Edge to get rid of these annoying thing. Select the dead tree by Ctrl + Left Click on its layer and hit Ctrl + Alt + R to open Refine Edge.

elune 13a

Just with a few tweaks, the white pixels are gone!

elune 13b

Step 14

Apply following adjustment layers to the dead tree.

Brightness/Contrast -> Exposure -> Photo Filter

elune 14elune 14a

elune 14b

Here is the result

elune 14c

Step 15

Open the Dead Tree 2 and extract the following part

elune 15

Place it behind the model.

elune 15a

Add an Exposure adjustment layer

elune 15b

And we have some extra dead tree for the girl!

elune 15c

Step 16

This is a very interesting step and I recommend you try it out by your free will. We will make the model being tangled by the dead tree’s branches. Open the Dead Tree 1 stock again and get any piece of branch you want. For example this one

elune 16

Paste it to our document, right click on its layer and choose Convert To Smart Object, by this way we can transform the branch freely without fearing the quality reduction.

Now you can bend, twist the branch at your free will. Hit Ctrl + T to bring up the Transform tool, right click to choose the option. In this picture I use Warp to bend the branch.

elune 16a

Continue duplicate and bend the branches. Make them twist around the model.

elune 16b

Step 17

Continue creating twisted branches as many as you like, just don’t overdo it.

elune 17

Create a new layer and paint some shadow to the part which the branches are on the model. Change the Blend Mode to Overlay.

elune 17a

Step 18

Group all the branch layers into one group (Hold Shift and Left Click on the branch layer at the top then click the branch layer at the bottom of the list to select all of them, Ctrl + G to group). Apply these adjustment layers to the group.

Brightness/Contrast -> Curves

elune 18elune 18a

Also we want some extra shadow on those branches so create a new layer, Create Clipping Mask with the group and paint some black on the branches.

elune 18b

Change the Blend Mode to Soft Light, Opacity 47%

elune 18c

Step 19

Create more shadow at the bottom of the model and the branches on the ground with Black soft brush.

elune 19

Opacity 45%

elune 19a

Step 20

We had fun with the branches, now its time to have fun with ivies. Open the Ivy stock which has been rendered nicely for you to use. Place it behind the model.

elune 20

Place more and transform them as your will as well. The more the merrier! Make them follow the branches.

elune 20a

Step 21

Add this Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the ivies. Group them into one before doing this!

elune 21a

Our result so far.

elune 21b

Step 22

Bring more ivies to the front of the model and make them follow the branches on her body.

elune 22

elune 22a

Step 23

Similar with step 21, add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to all the ivies at the front.

elune 23

elune 23a

Step 24

With the appearance of the branches and ivies, we will need to some extra shadow to the ground since the current shadow is a little weak.

elune 24

The method is similar to the way we create shadow in the previous step. Change the Blend Mode to Soft Light.

elune 24a

Step 25

Now we will create a simple yet special effect for the model so the piece looks more…magical. Create a new layer , grab the Pen Tool and draw a curve line around her body like this :

elune 25

Before continue please go to the Brush Tool, choose a 5px round brush with 100% Hardness.

Back to the Pen Tool, right click on the curve line you just drew and choose Stroke Path. Choose Brush as Tool, tick on the Simulate Pressure.

elune 25a

The Stroke Path option will use your Foreground color as the stroke color so set the Foreground color as #6391b7 then click OK. Here’s what we will have :

elune 25b

Step 26

Apply these setting for the Curve Line layer’s Blending Option :

elune 26

elune 26a

Change the Blend Mode to Linear Dodge and we will have a nice glowing line!

elune 26b

Do the same with another line.

elune 26c

Step 27

Create another new layer, use 7px round brush, 100% Hardness.

elune 27

Open the Brush Panel (shortcut : F5) and adjust the setting like this :

elune 27a

Now paint around the model, with the setting we just had, the round will be scattered as we paint, create a bokeh-like effect. Apply the same Blending Option and color like we did with the Curve Lines.

elune 27b

Step 28

We would want to add an extra light to increase the effect we just made. Use a soft brush with color #6bb6fd and paint around the model, change the Blend Mode to Linear Dodge and Opacity 40%

elune 28

Step 29

Open the Ivy stock again and place it at the top left of the image. Apply a 1,6px Gaussian Blur.

elune 29a

Duplicate the ivy, resize it a little bit and place it behind the original ivy.

elune 29ab

Group those ivy layers into a group and apply this Brightness/Contrast :

elune 29c

Done with the left!
