Create a Wonderfully Colorful and Everlasting Dream” Fantasy Manipulation

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to create a fantasy, heavenly scene with a beautiful dreamer. You’ll learn how to play with color, blend using adjustment layers and brush, add texture, work with lighting effect and more.

What you’ll be creating

We’ll start this tutorial by creating a beautiful lake scene from a sky image. Then we’ll add nebula texture to increase fantasy effect for the scene. Later we’ll add clouds, paper boat, model, castle and blend them using adjustment layers, masking and brush. Then we’ll continue to build up the color and light of the image with light and nebula textures. Finally we’ll use an adjustment layer to enhance the final effect. I recommend you to use Photoshop CS3 or newer to follow this tutorial properly.

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop with the given settings:

Open the sky stock. Use the Retangular Marquee Tool (M) to make a selection of the sky part:

Use the Move Too (V) to drag this selection onto the top of our white canvas:

Name it “sky”.

Press Cmd/Ctrl+J to duplicate this layer. Go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical, move it down then place this layer under the sky one.

Go to Filter > Blur >Motion Blur and pick the settings below:

Name this layer “lake”.

To add some red and blue to the scene, I used an adjustment layer. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance:

I used a Curves adjustment layer to add some nice cyan tone to the picture:

To change the contrast of the pic, I used a Levels adjustment layer:

On this Levels layer mask use a soft black brush with opacity from 20-25% to erase the center and right side of the pic. You can see how I did it on the layer mask and result on the picture:

To create more light for the sky I used a soft brush with color #f9e398 to paint over the right of the horizon. Change the mode to Overlay 100%:

Click the second button at the bottom of the Layers Panel to add mask to this layer. Use a soft black brush to reduce the light effect as the image below shows:

Place the nebula 1 image over the picture, then change the mode to Hard Light 100%:

Add layer mask to this one. Use a soft brush to reduce the nebula effect in the sky and on the lake:

Duplicate this layer, flip it vertically and move it down to create reflection for this nebula effect:

Apply Motion Blur to this layer:

Make the nebula 1 layer and its reflection selected then press Cmd/Ctrl+G to create a group for them. Change the mode of this group from Pass Through (default group mode) to Hard Light 100%. Make a Curves adjustment layer on the top of the layers within this group to change the color of the nebula effect:

I used a Color Balance adjustment layer to make this effect more vibrant:

Make a new layer on the top (above the nebula 1 group). Change the brush to the cloud ones. I used number 1252, color #fcf5db to paint a cloud at the middle section of the lake:

Duplicate this layer, move the lower down to make reflection for this cloud after flipping it vertically. Lower the opacity of this reflection layer to 50%:

Use layer mask to reduce the top of this reflection then apply Motion Blur :

I painted another cloud (number 1369) at the right of the first one:

Make reflection for this cloud as done with the first:

Paint two other clouds at the left of the first and make reflections for them:

I used a Curves adjustment layer with Clipping Mask to darken a cloud a little:

On this Curves layer mask use a soft brush to erase the top to keep it a bit darker than the bottom:

Group all the cloud layers and their reflection ones. Change the mode of this group to Normal 100%. Add a Selective Color adjustment layer to add some yellow to the white clouds:

On its layer mask, use a soft brush to reduce the yellow effect on the cloud at the left edge:

I used a Curves adjustment layer to darken and change the color of the clouds:

Apply brush masking to refine the light on them. You can see the result on the mask and on the picture:

Open the paper boat stock and extract it from the background.

Make a new layer and active the Clone Tool (S). Use this tool to remove the splash on the boat:

Hide the background layer. Hit Cmd/Ctrl+Option/Alt+Shift+E to merge the extracted boat and the clone layers. To reform this boat, use the Lasso Tool to choose the bottom of the boat, right click it, choose Layer via Cut:

Use the Free Transform Tool (Cmd/Ctrl+T) to scale this bottom down to fit the top of the boat:

Merge all transparent layers.

Step 21

Place the merged boat at the cloud on the right edge. I set this layer under the clouds group:

Make reflection for this boat as done with another elements:

Group the boat and its reflection layers. I used a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to reduce the saturation of the boat:

Add some vibrant color to the boat with Color Balance:

I used a Curves adjustment layer to brighten the top of the boat:

On this Curves layer mask erase the bottom with a soft black brush as it should be darker than the top.

Open the model stock. Use your own method to extract her from the background.

Make a new layer and use the Clone Tool to remove the tattoo and branches on her legs:

Make a new layer. Active the Brush Tool with the basic ones and color #989079. Press F5 to change the settings of this brush:

Use this brush to paint flying hair strands for the model.

Make another layer and pick the lighter color (#deddc8) for this brush. Paint more hair for her:

Merge the model, clone and hair ones.

Place the model onto the biggest cloud (at the center):

Use layer mask with a cloud brush to blend the model legs with this cloud:

Make reflection for the model as done with the others.

Group the model and her reflection layers. Make a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer within this group to reduce the redness on two these layers:

Use Color Balance to add some vibrant yellow to the model:

I used Curves to darken the front of the model then erase the rest of hers to keep its brightness:

To add some bright yellow light of the scene reflected on the model and her reflection I made a new layer, used a soft brush with color #ecc886 to paint on the right of them. Change the mode of this layer to Overlay 100%:

Cut out the castle and place it onto a left cloud. Pick a cloud brush (I chose the number 1369) to blend this castle with the cloud:

Make reflection for this castle as done with another elements:

Now come back to the clouds group. Select the mask of the cloud’s reflection mentioned in previous step. Choose the cloud brush you used to mask off the castle and press F5 to flip its position:

Paint on the top of this reflection to create a likeness between this cloud and its reflection through the lake:

Group the castle and its reflection layers. Use Color Balance to add some warm color to them:

Use a Curves adjustment layer to darken them a little:

To change the contrast of the whole scene, make a new layer on the top . Active the Gradient Tool (G), choose Radial Gradient with default colors (black and white). Change the mode to Soft Light 100%:

Apply layer mask to refine the contrast of the image:

In this step I use a soft brush with the color #ecc886 to paint over the model and her reflection to give them a glowing effect. Change the mode to Overlay 70%:

Open the light 1 images pack. I chose “starry4” to cover the working image then set the mode to Screen 100%:

Use a soft brush with opacity about 20-25% to reduce the red effect on the top of the scene:

I used Hue/Saturation to turn some of the glowing dots on the lake into blue:

Erase the higher parts to keep their color as before adding Hue/Saturation:

Duplicate this light layer and lower its position at the center. Apply layer mask to smoothly blend it with the scene: :

After duplicating it again , move it to the top right and erase gently this effect with layer mask:

I used a Levels adjustment layer to reduce the saturation of this part:

On its layer mask use a soft brush to erase some of the glowing dots :

Add this texture to the part around the paper boat:

I used Hue/Saturation to turn the color into a bright yellow:

Place the nebula 2 image at the model position. Use the Warp Tool (Edit > Transform > Warp) to bend this image as shown below:

Change the mode to Screen 100% and use layer mask to remove the hard edges:

Duplicate this layer and alter the mode to Color Dodge 100%. Here are the results of its layer mask and the picture:

Open the light 2 images pack and choose number 38 (feel free to take the one you like). Press Cmd/Ctrl+J to duplicate this layer. Go to Filter > Liquify and choose the Forward Warp Tool with the settings below:

Use this tool to turn the form of this light into a curve:

Drag this result onto the model part and bend it a little with the Warp Tool:

Change the mode to Linear Dodge 100% and use layer mask to reduce the light effect:

Create a Fantasy Warrior Painting From Scratch

Let’s face it – everyone likes fantasy. And girls. And fantasy girls. Not everyone can draw them though. Follow this tutorial and hopefully you’ll learn a lot about painting your own fantasy character!

Step 1

Start with a basic sketch of the pose of your character. No details, just rough lines. If you don’t feel so sure about your anatomy/pose skills, don’t hesitate to use one of SenshiStock references (link above). One tip about it: if your goal is to be able to draw any pose without references in the future, don’t just trace the picture, place it next to you and try to draw the lines you see. DON’T DRAW OVER THEM! You’d get a perfect copy this way, but it would not teach you anything.

Step 2

When your sketch is done, change the resolution of your picture to 300 dpi (go to Image > Image Size or just click Ctrl + Alt + I). The bigger the picture, the more detailed your work can be, so use the biggest one your computer can handle. Final picture should be less than 25% of the original size.

Step 3

Now you need to prepare a base for the character’s body. Choose hard brush (you can use one of Dan Lu Visi – link above) with 100% Opacity and Flow, and draw the border of the silhouette on a new layer. You can use #c6b19c color, it’s a base color of skin.

Use Magic Wand (W) to select everything around the silhouette, then click Ctrl+ Shift + I to inverse the selection. If you filled the selection now, you’d probably fully fill the soft edges you can’t even see (because you used a brush, not a pencil), but they need to be there for anti-aliasing effect. So, go to Select > Modify > Contract and choose 2-5 pixels. This way you’ll recede from the soft edge and will be able to fill the inside without any problems (use Paint Bucket Tool (G) or go to Edit > Fill).

Now use Zoom Tool (Z) to check if you did any mistakes in the silhouette. Smudge Tool (S) is good for this, but use it very carefully – don’t make your edges blurry.

Step 4

Now it’s time for a background. When you design a character, you don’t want the background to be too disturbing, still, without it the character looks fake (as if it don’t live in any world). To get a nice effect you can use a dark-light trick – one part of the background is dark, and the light source is quite strong and visible. So, our warioress is standing on the ground – paint it with hard brush with low Flow – and there’s a sky behind her – paint it with soft brush/cloud brush. Use glum, unsaturated colors, as it’s just a background for the real background.

Define the background with more saturated colors. In my scene it’s night (so the sky is dark-blue) and there’s a fire somewhere near (maybe the warioress has something to do with it?). Blue-orange is the most classic combination and it works everywhere, trust me. Even in the day scene it’s good to use both colors to light (orange as sun’s light, and blue as sky’s reflection).

Now I’ll show you a trick for strong lights – pick a light color and choose Linear Light mode for your brush. Before touching anything, make sure your background is on one layer. Then paint the light on it, using this mode frugally, since too much light could kill the scene (unless it’s your style, then go on).

Step 5

Select the layer with the sketch (make sure it’s right over the body base) and choose “Make Clipping Mask” from the Layer menu (or click Ctrl + Shift+ G). This way all the parts of the sketch that are over the body base will be clipped. There may be a lot of layers within the clipping mask. Create a new one under the sketch, it’s going to be used for shading. Lower the opacity of the sketch to make it a non-disturbing template.

Take a hard brush with low Flow (15-20%) and paint the shadows. Don’t dive into details, this phase is supposed to help you get rid of the sketch. Remember about light source!

Step 6

Before we dive into details of the body, it’s good to complete the outfit – it’s going to cover a lot of skin, so painting these parts of skin would be a waste of time. Sketch the outfit with strong lines on a new layer outside of the clipping mask.

Now do the same as with the body – paint a base for the outfit, clip the sketch and lower its opacity.

Step 7

Hair can be considered as a part of the outfit too. Paint the strands with hard brush (60-70% Opacity), then fill empty spaces on a lower layer to fully cover the head. Cross the strands all the time, even the straightest hair tangle. It’s good to draw the strands as X’s, not lines.

Step 8

Let’s come back to the outfit. Part of it will be made of red leather, the other part – of metal.

Red should be shaded with dark green (according to color theory), so use it to shade all the leather parts. I used the same shade to change the color of boots and pelts too, too much red would look… weird. When it comes to the metal, shade it with everything that surrounds it – sky, light, red leather…

Some people have problems with making lineless artwork sharp. A good trick helping it is not to use a light on a whole lighted surface. Leave some base color at the border – very thin one – and you’ll see how good it looks from distance.

Use the colors of the sky to put lights on every surface. Try to add some depth to it, and follow the trick from the step above all the time.

Step 9 – leather brush

Create a new file and draw some scratches there. Avoid putting any details, it should be consistent and almost round in shape. Use only black. When you’re done, choose Edit > Define Brush Preset. Now you’ve got a new brush!

Now you need to adjust the preferences to your needs. These are my options – you don’t need to follow them, feel free to experiment.

Now create a new layer within the outfit’s clipping mask and use your new brush to paint leather texture. Don’t leave it as it is, shade it too, cover a little with other tones – make it natural.

Step 10

Shade all the outfit carefully, draw the borders – finish all the leather elements so that you can leave it for now.

Color the pauldron roughly – simulate some scratches, then put some colors and cover them with soft painted grey.

When metal’s surface is polished, it reflects everything around it. So, look around and paint it on the pauldron. Use hard brush, paint quickly, and use Screen Mode when you need to stress any light.

The heels are in the shadow, so they won’t reflect so much light. Paint them with dark colors and don’t forget to blend them into the ground.

Use the method you’ve just learnt to every metal surface in the outfit. You can also add some details, like buckles.

Step 12

To create a chain-skirt we’ll need another brush. It will save you a lot of time – who’d like to draw a link by link?

Use this brush to paint the skirt. If you’ve got any problems with it, try to change some brush options – you may find a better way than mine.

Some part of the skirt is exposed to light – and since it’s metal, it should strongly reflect it. You can also change the skirt’s edge by making a holes in it with Eraser Tool (E).

Step 13

It’s time to complete the hair now. First shade it in normal way, according to color theory (green on red).

Now use environmental lights to cover the hair, just like you did with the outfit.

We completely forgot abut the sword! Sketch it using Line Tool to stress its direction, then sketch the hands that we skipped. If you have problems with them (who doesn’t?), there’s one tip for you: take a picture of your own hand in the position you need, then use it as reference. Works every time!

Shade the hands without details, just to get rid off the sketch.

Prepare a base for the sword – when it comes to the blade, it’s good to use Pen Tool (P) to keep the shape. If you prefer to use Brush, do it with 100% Opacity and Flow.

Create new layer over the sword’s base and convert it to Clipping Mask, then put basic colors on it. No details yet!

Ok, now you’re allowed to put details. First make sure what the elements are made of, and use a proper technique for them. Should they be mat or shiny? Do they reflect every color around them?

Use advice from Step 11 to simulate metal surface of the blade. It should be easy for you now. Tip: when you want some little part to shine stronger, first draw the light with Hard Brush, then stress it with Soft Brush in Screen Mode.

Step 15

Now it’s time to come back to the skin (of course, we could’ve start from it, but then you wouldn’t want to cover it with the outfit…). Use dark green to paint the shades (hard brush, low Flow). She’s going to look a bit dirty, but let it be for now.

Take a soft brush and paint the skin with it, just to blend the darker parts with base color. It’s a great trick, gives almost glossy effect.

Step 16

We’re going to repeat Step 15 with the opposite shade now. Use very light green with Linear Mode of the brush and paint the lights carefully (hard brush, low Flow).

And again, use soft brush to blend the color of the skin.

When adding life to the skin you can realize some of the things you’ve finished before don’t look finished anymore. For example, metal parts should be much more shiny than the skin. Add some light to them with Screen or Linear Light Mode.

For now we’ve just use universal lights – it means they don’t depend on the colors of environment. They can’t stay like this, so use warm, red/orange color to put some light on the character again. Vivid Light Mode will be perfect for this.

Time to add some details on the face. When it comes to the eye, it’s a good habit to always put blue light on it, using hard brush in Linear Light Mode. Whatever the colors around, I always use blue. Don’t ask me why, it just works

There are a lot of “skin brush” packs on the Internet, but if you want to make your own and not to care about any credits, you should be able to do it now. It may look like this below, but I’m sure you can do better. When it comes to the options, the ones from leather brush should work here too.

Use your brush to cover all the skin (light green, Linear Light, very small brush). You may not see the difference, but it’s a detail that looks great when printed.

Step 20

The last thing here will be adding texture to… everything. There’s certainly some dust in the air, so it can’t be smooth. I’ll show you the trick that’s used by the greatest artists: create a new layer on the top and fill it with some dark color. Then go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise.

The options can change something, but it’s all up to your style. Experiment!

Change the layer blending mode to Overlay and lower the Opacity. The grain shouldn’t be visible, but it can’t be invisible either. You need to feel this moment.

Open up Photoshop and create new document

Open the Wooden background , press Ctrl+ T to scale it fit to our background.Now Image > Adjustment> Curve, like this image

Create a Rounded rectangle (shortcut U) with fixed size 700px x 550px and Radius = 40px. Fill it with color # 742b00

Now press Filter > Noise > Add noise

Then right click for Blending Option > Drop Shadow

And we got result like this, we name it ” cover 1″

Next, we create second Rounded rectangle (shortcut U) with same size 700px x 550px and Radius = 40px. Fill it with color # 5c3016. Then press Ctrl + T to scale it a little bit smaller than first rectangle which name “cover 1”. And we name the second rounded rectangle as “cover 2”

Duplicate the “cover 2” ,click on Layer thumbnail and change the color with # 742b00. We name this layer as “cover 3” . Go to Filter > Noise > Add noise

Next, go to Filter > Blur > Motion blur.

Next, we create the fourth rounded rectangle with fixed size 660px x 520px, fill the color #571803,add the layer style like this image. We name it as ” cover 4″

Next, we create new layer and name it as “Middle line”, we set up the hard brush(shortcut B) with size 2px and set foreground color #742b00, then pick the Pen tool (shortcut P) and create a vertical line in middle of “Paper” layer. Right click to stroke path and choose tool as brush

Create a new layer and name it as “Horizon lines” , put it under ” Middle line” layer. We set the foreground color #017d93 and set hard brush with size 2px. We draw some horizon lines with same ways as we draw middle line(Step 23). Then we set the ” Horrizon lines” layer as Multiply and lower the opacity 50%. And we got the result like this

Next, we create a new layer and name it ” Vertical lines”, set the foreground color # ff0000 and hard brush with size 2px.We draw 2 vertical line (use same ways in step 23), then we set the “Vertical lines” layer as Linear Burn and lower opacity 50%

Next, we pick the Ellipse tool to draw some circles with color # 000000 and put it like this

Now, we pick the Rounded rectangle with Radius = 40px to create a rounded rectangle like this

We’ll start this tutorial by setting up a natural scene from the landscape, sky, mountain and rock images. Then we’ll add the balcony, model and trees. Later we’ll enhance the scene color and contrast with various adjustment layers. Finally we’ll use a few layers to create lighting effect.

Tutorial Resources

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop with the given settings:

Step 2

Open the landscape image. Use the Retangular Marquee Tool (M) to choose the upper part of the landscape as shown below:

Drag the selected part into our document and transform it using the Cmd/Ctrl+T key:

Click the second button at the bottom of the Layers Panel to add a mask to this layer. Use a basic, soft brush with black color to remove the hard edges of the sky:

On the landscape layer, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the radius to 4 px:

To darken the landscape I used an adjustment layer. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves:

On this layer mask use a soft black brush to erase the top right of the scene:

Place the sky above the landscape and rotate it using Cmd/Ctrl+T as shown below:

Add a mask to this layer and remove the rough edges of the sky with a soft black brush:

Apply Gaussian Blur with 2 px to this sky part:

I used a Curves adjustment layer with Clipping Mask to brighten the sky a bit:

On this layer mask use a soft black brush with a very low opacity (10-15%) to reduce the lightness on the left side of the sky:

Open the mountain stock. Extract the mountain and place it in the left of the picture:

I used a Curves adjustment layer (Clipping Mask) to brighten this mountain:

On this layer mask use a soft black brush to erase the edges of the mountain where are hidden from the light:

I used a Color Fill layer to darken the edges a little. Go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color:

Lower the opacity of this layer to 20%. On this layer mask use a soft black brush to erase the effect on the right of the mountain where we don’t want to be affected by this layer:

Make a new layer, change the mode to Overlay 100% and fill with 50% gray:

Take the Dodge and Burn Tool (O) with Midtones Range, Exposure about 15-20 % to refine the contrast and details on the mountain. You can see how I did it with Normal mode and the result with Overlay mode:

Step 12

Extract the rock from the background and place it at the right edge of the scene:

I used Curves to darken the rock:

On this Curves layer mask use a soft black brush to remove the dark on the left edge of the rock:

I used Color Balance to match the color of the rock with the background:

Take the balcony part from the original photo and place it at the left edge of our main image:

I used Curves to darken the balcony:

On this layer mask use a soft black brush to reduce the darkness on the following parts:

I use another Curves adjustment layer to brighten the front part of the balcony and apply brushing on this layer mask:

I used Hue/Saturation to reduce the saturation of the balcony:

On this layer mask I used a soft black with the opacity from 20% to 100% to restore the saturated light on the balcony front:

I used Photo Filter to add some purple tone to the balcony:

To refine the light and shade of the balcony I used the Dodge and Burn Tool on a new layer:

Isolate the model from the background and place her onto the balcony area:

Add a mask to the model layer and use a hard black brush to remove the lower part of her dress and make her look like standing inside the balcony:

I used a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer for the model. On this layer mask use a soft black brush to erase the effect on the model front:

I used Color Balance to add some purple tone to the model. Also apply brushing on the front of the head, dress and hair to keep some sun highlight there:

I used Curves to brighten the model. On this layer mask use a soft black brush to clear the light effect behind and on the left to make a nice contrast:

To add more highlight to the model hair, face, dress and shoulder I used the Dodge tool:

Open the tree 1 and 2 images. As they have a transparent background so simply drag them into our document using the Move Tool. I’ve placed them at the two edges of the pic:

Apply Gaussian Blur with 8 px to the trees:

Select the tree layers and press Cmd/Ctrl+G to make a group for them. Change the mode of this group from Pass Through (default group mode) to Normal 100%. Make a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer on the top of the layers within this group:

I used Curves to darken the trees and apply brushing on this layer mask:

Open the tree 3 image. Isolate the tree at the top right and place it at the top left of our working image:

I used Hue/Saturation to change the color of this tree:

I used Color Balance with the same purpose, also darken it:

Extract the birds and place them at the right of the scene (the horizon area):

Use Color Balance to increase the vibrance of the scene:

Since this step we’ll make light for the scene. Create a new layer on the top. Use a soft brush with the color #221501 to paint on the horizon area. Change this layer mode to Linear Dodge 100%:

Make another layer and use a soft brush with the color #c09469 to add more light to the landscape and the mountain. Set this layer mode to Soft Light 100%:

On a new layer, use the same brush to paint on the trees, mountain and landscape. Change this layer mode to Soft Light 100%:

Create a new layer again and change the brush color to #fed58a. Paint on the horizon to make a stronger light there. Set this layer mode to Hard Light 100%:

I used a new layer with a soft brush and the same color to paint on the top of the trees. I altered this layer mode to Overlay 100%:

On a new layer use the same brush to paint on the rock to make some light there. Set this layer mode to Overlay 100%:

We’ll take care of the mountain. On a new layer use a hard brush (better use a tablet pen) with the same color to paint the highlight on the mountain, then change the mode to Hard Light 50%:
