Create a Fantasy Fish Scene above the Sky

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to create a fantasy fish scene using a variety of photo manipulation techniques. You’ll learn how to combine different stock images into a cohesive scene using blending, adjusting colors, masking and brush. You’ll learn also how to focus on the details, work with lighting, manage your layers and more.

What you’ll be creating

We’ll start this tutorial by setting up a sky scene from three stock images. Then we’ll add the boat, tree, model ,fishes and blend them using adjustment layers, masking and brush. Later we’ll adjust the color, light, contrast and finish it up with an adjustment layer. You should use Photoshop CS3 or newer to follow this tutorial properly.

Tutorial Resources

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop with the following settings:

Step 2

Press Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+N to make a new layer. Active the Gradient Tool (G), choose Radial Gradient with the color #5a513d and #d1cba2. Drag a line from the top center to the bottom:

Step 3

Open the sky 1 image. Use the Move Tool (V) to drag it into our canvas and change the mode to Soft Light 100%:

Step 4

To make this sky look smoother, go to Filter > Blur > Gassian Blur and set the radius to 2 px:

Step 5

I used an adjustment layer with Clipping Mask to change the color of the sky. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves:

Step 6

Place the sky 2 image over the sky 1 and change the mode to Hard Light 100%:

Step 7

Apply Gassian Blur with 7 px to this sky layer:

Step 8

I used a Color Balance adjustment layer (Clipping Mask) to change the color of the sky 2:

Step 9

Drag the clouds image into our working document and use the Cmd/Ctrl+T key to rotate it as shown below:

Click the second button at the bottom of the Layers Panel to add a mask to this layer. Use a basic, soft brush with black color to remove the hard edges of this clouds image:

Step 10

I used Color Balance to add some warm color to these clouds:

Step 11

I used Curves to darken the foreground edges a little:

On this layer mask use a soft black brush to erase the part near the horizon (I aim to add light there).

Step 12

Open the images pack contained the boat. Isolate it from the white background and position it at the middle of the clouds:

Add a mask to this layer and use a black brush with the hardness about 30% to blend the bottom of the boat with the clouds, and increase the hardness of the brush to 100% to clear a part of the top left:

Step 13

To give the boat more light, I used a Layer Style effect. Double click the boat layer, choose Inner Shadow:

Step 14

I used Curves to darken some parts of the boat where are hidden from the light:

On this layer mask use a soft black brush to erase the dark effect on the higher part where is iluminated by the light:

Step 15

I used a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to reduce the boat saturation:

Step 16

I used Color Balance to match the boat color with the scene:

Step 17

Open the tree image. Use the Lasso Tool (L) to choose the trunk and drag it onto the top left of the boat. Use the Warp Tool (Edit > Transform > Warp) to bend the trunk as show below:

Use a layer mask to blend this trunk with the boat:

Step 18

Take the leaves part and put it above the trunk and tweak it a little with the Warp Tool to fit the angle of the trunk:

Add a mask to this layer. Use a black brush to remove the unwanted part at the bottom of the leaves:

Step 19

Make the trunk and leaves layers selected and press Cmd/Ctrl+G to create a group for them. Change the mode of this group from Pass Through (default group mode) to Normal 100%. On the top of the layers within this group, use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to alter the color of the tree:

Step 20

I used Color Balance to add some yellow to the tree:

Step 21

Make another Hue/Saturation adjustment to reducing the tree saturation:

Step 22

I used Curves to brighten the tree:

On this Curves layer mask use a soft black brush to decrease the light on some parts of the tree to make its contrast suitable for the light in the background:

Step 23

Make a new layer on the top of the group. Use a hard brush with the color #987b47, 4-5 px to paint on the trunk and branches to reduce the contrast of them and make them look more blended with the boat:

Step 24

Extract the child from the background and place her in the center of the boat, flip her horizontally (Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal) to fit the light direction:

Add a mask to this layer and use a hard black brush to erase the bottom of the dress and make her look like sitting inside the boat:

Step 25

I used a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to reduce the child saturation:

Step 26

Make a Color Balance adjustment layer to add some color to the child:

Step 27

I used Curves to brighten this little girl:

Step 28

Open the fishes image (feel free to use your own) and isolate them from the white background. Take the fishes you like and arrange them around the boat and girl.

Add a layer mask to the fishes on the clouds. Use a soft black brush to make the fishes look like swimming in these clouds:

Step 29

I used Curves to darken two fishes at the left edge:

Step 30

Make a group for the fish layers and their related ones (Cuves) as done with the tree. Use a Hue/Saturation adjustment for the fishes:

Step 31

Add some color to them with Color Balance:

Step 32

Brighten the fishes with a Curves adjustment layer:

On this layer mask apply brushing to decrease the light on some of the fishes:

Step 33

Right click the fishes group, choose Duplicate Group. Right click the duplicated group, choose Merge Group. Now we have the selection of the fishes on a separate layer. Turn it off.

Step 34

Make a new layer on the top. Hold Cmd/Ctrl while clicking the fishes copy thumbnail layer to load its selection:

Use a soft brush with the color #ebe7da to paint on some parts of them to create more light there. Change this layer mode to Soft Light 100%:

Step 35

Create a Gradient Map adjustment layer on the top of all layers:

Lower the opacity of this layer to 20% and apply brushing on its mask:

Step 36

Use Color Balance to add some warm color to the scene:

Lower this effect by brushing on the layer mask as shown below:

Step 37

Add two Photo Filter adjustment layers to the top of all layers:

Step 38

To change the light focus, make a new layer, use the Gradient Tool with Radial option and default colors (black and white).

Change this layer mode to Soft Light 100% and use a layer mask to reduce the dark effect on the top left of the pic:

Step 39

Create a new layer and use a soft brush with the color #825111 to paint on the right edge . Alter this layer mode to Color 10% to add more warm color to this area:

Step 40

Make a Hue/Saturation adjustment on the top and change the Yellows settings:

Here is the result after erasing the top left and the middle right of the pic with a soft black brush:

Step 41

I used Color Balance to give the scene some sublte cool color:

On this layer mask use a soft black brush with the opacity about 20-25% to erase the most of the clouds part:

Step 42

Use Photo Filter to add more warm color to the scene:

Erase the right edge on its layer mask:

Step 43

I used Vibrance to boost the final color:

Reduce the saturation some parts below:

Step 44

Final step (optional): Press Cmd/Ctrl+Option/Alt+Shift+E to merge all visible layers. Go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask:

On the Filter Mask use a soft black brush to erase the details you find sharper than you expected:

How to Create an Emotional Soft-Tone Photo Manipulation

Create this emotional blue-tone photo manipualtion of a woman in a forest with flying petals. This tutorial uses few resources and will show you how to use techniques such as dodging and burning to create a dramatic look.

Preview of Final Results

Tutorial Resources

Step 1 – The Background

Open the Background and cut the part you’re interested in.

We want to give more visibility to the subject, so let’s apply some blur here. Duplicate the background layer and add Gaussian Blur.

(Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur)

The amount depends on the picture, it’s not always the same. (I generally use a range between 5px and 10px)

This step is optional. It depends on your taste!

Duplicate the blurred background and set the blend mode to Multiply. Play with Opacity and Fill because sometimes Multiply blend gives the picture too much darkness. (In this case I left both at 100%).

Step 2 – The Lady

Open the stock with the lady and extract her.

Create a new layer above the background layers and put there the lady. I previously worked on hair and skin but we’re not here for that! You can easily find tutorials about hair and skin.

Create a layer between the lady and the background and paint some hair (I suggest you a little hard brush). In alternative you can download some strands stock and place them in the layer you created. When you’re done just smudge the part that is under the dress of the lady.

Below you can see the result.

Step 3 – Petals

Create a new layer above everything. Download the PSD containing the petals and paste them into this layer. Put them in the position you like.

Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment level just for the petals layer (with ALT button) and set the Lightness at -30 because they have too brightness.

Now we want they seem to fall. We can achieve that result with blur. (Filter > Blur > Motion Blur). Amount can vary. It depends on how big is the resolution and on your taste.

Step 4 – Diamondsw

Create a new layer above the petals layer and with the diamonds brush paint some of them with white color. They have a lot of opacity so duplicate this layer 3 times and merge all 4 layers in one.

As you can see the brush will paint a lot of diamonds. So delete the ones you don’t want and put the remaining like they are falling from her hand.

Step 5 – Shadows

It’s time to shading! Add a Curve Adjustment layer above everything and drag the curve down like the image below. I set these values: Input 169 and Output 100. Set this layer to Multiply.

Everything will be darker but we don’t want this effect on the whole manipulation! So add a Mask to this level and fill it with black or, in alternative, go to Masks (the button close the Adjustments) and click the button Invert. The manipulation will turn as it was before, like you did nothing.

Now with a white soft brush paint over the black mask and the darkness will appear where you brush. You can now choose where shadows go! I use a brush with low opacity and flow (generally 30% for both, it depends on the areas to paint).

Below you can see so far where I painted the shadows.

Step 6 – Dodge & Burn

Create a new layer and set it to Overlay.

Go to: Edit > Fill > 50% Gray

On this layer you can now Burn and Dodge the areas you want to be darker or lighter.

My settings are: Range: For shadows 90% of the times is midtones. With lights it’s the same but sometimes, if you want more glowing lights you can also use the range Highlights. Exposure between 10% and 30%.

Use especially the Dodge on the diamonds, the highlights of her skin and the dress.

Below you can see where I dodged and burned.

This is the result.

Step 7 – Texture

Create a new layer and a texture like this (with a soft round brush). Set the layer to Soft Light

This is the result.

Step 8 – Light

Let’s add some light! Pick one of the lightest color from background (not white, I chose #e1f9ff). With a round hard brush paint something like a did in the picture below.

Now apply some blur to completely dissolve it.

(Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) (Sometimes I need 250px to achieve this effect)

Step 9 – Final Adjustments

I think the picture is too much saturated. So Add a Hue/Sat Adjustments Layer and set the Saturation to -70 (You can choose the amount you want)

Highlights. Create a new layer. Set the brush Mode to Overlay (Opacity and Flow vary, I generally set 30%). With a light color from the background paint some highlights. I did it on the red areas I’m showing you here.

This is the result.

Let’s create a Vignette. Create a new layer. Pick a dark color from the background and paint on the edges of the manipulation. Set the layer to Soft Light (Opacity and Fill 80%) and add a bit of Gaussian Blur if you want.

Let’s add a bit of contrast so that Lights and Shadows will be more interesting.

Create a Curve adjustment layer and set the Medium Contrast from the Preset Curves. On the white mask of this layer paint with a black brush on th face of the lady because it would be too dark. Set the layer to Luminosity and the Opacity to 70%.

Pair of Birds Painting Photoshop Tutorial

Tutorial Resources

Step 1 (Preparing Stock)

Firstly, open the picture provided :

Next, activate the pen tool in the tool panel. We will crop the umbrella from the picture. All we have to do is click on the edge of the umbrella to make a starting point anchor. Trace the edges of the umbrella with the pen tool by keeping on clicking until the path is closed. When the path is closed, right click on it to show path command option box. Choose make path selection to change the path into selection. Hit Shift+Ctrl+I to inverse the selection and then hit Del to clean the background.

Step 2 (Creating Flowers)

Now we have the umbrella with which we will create some shapes needed. In this step we will create flowers. Duplicate the umbrella. Hit Ctrl+T to activate free transform tool which is indicated by small squares as transforming points around the selected picture. Now right click on the duplicated umbrella to show transform command option window and choose Warp. Let’s tweak the umbrella to alter the shape of it by clicking and dragging to the directions needed to find desired shape. Duplicate the umbrella again and do the similar step to find the other desired shapes. See the illustration picture to guide us what to do in this step.

After finding the flower looking like shape, we need to give it some shadow and highlight. To do this, we just use the dodge tool. Please see the illustration picture to know the setting of the dodge tool. Dodge some parts of the shape to define the highlight.

Now switch to burn tool to give some shadow to the shape. Please see the illustration picture :

Do similar ways as in previous steps to give shadow and highlight to the other shape :

Step 3 (Creating Twigs)

From this step on, we will create twigs for the flowers. To achieve this, firstly go to the cropped umbrella again and cut out the stick of it. Duplicate the cut out two times and then merge them into a single layer. Duplicate this new single layer as many times as needed.

Select one of the duplications and then go to filter > liquify. Choose forward warp tool and tweak the shape of picture:

Next, do similar ways to the other duplication pictures. Try to vary the shapes we are creating in order not to look uniform. Once we have created the shapes, arrange them in such position that they look like twigs of a tree. Then alter the color of the twigs by giving them an adjustment layer: hue/saturation.

Step 4 (Creating Birds)

In this step on, we will still play around with warping to create a bird out of the umbrella. What we should do is duplicate again the umbrella. Warp the shape of the duplicated umbrella. Then, give it motion blur. Just name this layer blur shape.

Duplicate the blur shape layer. With the duplication layer selected, hit again Ctrl+T to activate free transform tool. Choose warp and tweak it to alter its shape into a wing of a bird.

Duplicate again the blur layer as many times as needed. Keep on messing around with warping each duplication layer to create different shapes. Here is the result I created:

Cut out a part of the umbrella stick. Alter the shape of the cut out like the one I did. This shape is supposed to be the body of the bird.

Now we have complete parts of a bird. What we are doing now is joining the parts into one single bird’s body.

Step 5 (Creating Butterflies)

With similar ways as the ones we do in creating the bird, we can create the other creature out of the same umbrella picture provided. This is the wing of butterfly I created:

We need to create the body of the butterfly. Create a new later (Shift+Ctrl+N). on this new layer, paint the body with dark green color. To define the shadow and highlight of the body, apply dodge and burn tool to it. Use the setting of the tool as the ones we use in creating flowers.:

Now add the wings to the body:

Here is the other butterfly I created:

Step 6 (Creating Hills)

In this step on, we will create hills for the background of the picture. Go again to the cropped umbrella. Cut out the stick. Then, duplicate it some times as needed. Merge the duplications into a single shape.

With the new single layer selected, go again to filter > liquify to alter and tweak the shape of it into one that looks like a hill.

Next, let’s enchant the look of the hill by smudging it. Activate the smudge tool. Use a very soft round brush for the smudge at 70-80% strength. Smudge the lines of the shape. Try to vary the size of the brush at between 8-10 pixel.

Duplicate the hill layer as many as needed. Scale the size of each duplication into the one needed and then arrange them to create a single hill.

Step 7 (Dead Tree)

The last object we will prepare for the scene is a tree. We still use the cropped umbrella to create the tree. After doing duplicating the stick of it, merging the duplication and then altering the shape with liquify tool, I created these shapes which are supposed to be the stem and branch of the tree.

Now, arrange the shapes into a single tree. First, duplicate the stem and place the duplication behind the original one. Then, add the branch to the stem. After that, duplicate the branch and scale the duplication down a bit. Place it to the right side of the stem. See the result shown in the illustration picture.

I decided to hide some parts in the tree by masking them to get the result like I did in the illustration picture:

Step 8 (Creating Background)

We have created some objects needed to fill the composition of the photo manipulation we are going to create. Start with creating a new document (Ctrl+N) with the following size:

Activate gradient tool and set the gradient to linear gradient. Fill the new document with gradient of #474af9 and #070b7d by clicking and dragging the gradient tool from the top down to bottom.

Now create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N) above the background. Make sure to set the color of foreground to #d3d3d4 and #b0b1f9 for the background. Go to filter > render > cloud. This will fill the layer with cloud. I named this layer cloud. Set the blending of this layer to overlay at 100% opacity.

Create another new layer. Fill this layer with linear gradient of #faea94 and #fcb406. I named this layer gradient. Set this layer’s blending to multiply at 100% opacity.

Create again a new layer. Take brush tool in the tool panel. Set the brush to normal mode at 100% opacity. Choose a very soft round brush and then, with white color set to foreground, click the brush on the new layer to create a white soft circle on it. I named this layer white. Keep it at 100% normal blending.

In this step we will proceed in setting color of the background. Firstly, create another new layer on which we will paint color of # fab730. Use a very soft round brush for this step. I named this layer orange. Set it to soft light at 100% opacity. Next, on another new layer, paint another color of #fcb305. Use a very soft round brush set to 40-50% opacity. I named this layer soft orange. Set this soft orange layer to multiply at 100% opacity. Duplicate it one time and set the duplication layer to color dodge blending at 100% opacity. Finally, create another new layer on which we will also paint another color of light yellow (#fae603). I named this layer yellow. Set this layer to color blending at 100% opacity.

Step 9 (Adding Moon)

We will create moon on the scene. To do this, create again a new layer. With white color, paint a circle almost in the mid of the scene. Set this layer to normal at 25% opacity. I named this layer moon.

Duplicate the moon layer. Then go to layer > layer style. Please see the illustration picture for setting of layer styles used. Then, set this layer to normal. Reduce its opacity to 52%.

Step 10

Finally, we will give an adjustment layer to the scene. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > color balance.

Step 11

After creating the background, we will add the objects we have created in previous steps. Firstly, we add the hill. Scale the hill to fit the size we want. Place it to fill the composition on the right. Finally set it to normal at 19% opacity.

Step 12

Duplicate the hill and place the duplication on the left

Step 13

Now add some trees on the canvas. Use the given tree brush to paint them.

Step 14

Add another object to the canvas: tree. Give more highlight to some parts of the tree. Use dodge tool to do this step. Please refer back to previous steps for the setting of the dodge tool.

Step 15

Finally, alter the color of the tree by applying a new adjustment layer to it. I gave it hue/saturation. Give this layer clipping mask.

Step 16

Next, open the texture image. Place this texture layer above the tree and hue/saturation layer. Give also this texture layer a clipping mask. Finally, set it to overlay at 100% opacity.

Step 17

Create a new layer under the tree layer. Take brush tool and choose default grass brush to paint some brush on this new layer. See the illustration picture for our inspiration:

Step 18

Add the bird to scene. Scale the size of it to fit the composition.

Step 19

Duplicate the bird. Tweak the duplication bird by wrapping a bit in order not to look uniform with the original one. Alter the color of the duplication by applying hue/saturation on it.

Step 20

Now add the twigs to the canvas. Scale the size and arrange its position to fit the composition of the image. Give some highlight to some parts of the twigs. Use dodge tool for this purpose.

Step 21

Add more twigs. Do the same thing as in step 43 for this step.

Step 22

After the addition of the twigs, proceed to paint some leaves for them. Go to costume shape tool and choose the leaf shape. With dark green color paint the shape on a new layer. Then, use dodge and burn tool to define the shadow and highlight on the leaf.

Step 23

Add more leaves.

Step 24

Now add the flowers to the scene.

Step 25

To complete the composition, add butterflies and smaller birds. Try to alter the color of the butterflies and birds by applying hue/saturation. Choose any color you desire for them. For our inspiration, I created the result like the one illustrated below:

Step 26 (Color Adjustment)

I decided to give more adjustment layers to the scene: two hue/saturations. Please see the illustration picture for the setting of each:

More adjustment layers, firstly, we will give level. Mask some part of this level adjustment layer and set it to normal at 100% opacity. Duplicate the level layer and set it to 50% normal blending. Finally, I added photo filter and set normal at 100% opacity for this photo filter.

Again, we will add more adjustment layers as shown in the illustration picture below:

Step 27 (Adding Cloud)

Hit Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E to stamp all visible layers to create a new single layer. Then, go to filter > other > high pass. Set 2% for its radius. I named this layer high pass. Take brush tool, set it to low opacity about 10-12%. With white color, paint some cloud and lines on the hills. Finally, set this layer to overlay at 100% opacity.

Here is the final composition I created after I add more cloud in front of the moon:

Step 28

Create a new layer. Paint soft black gradation color around the edge of the scene. Use soft brush to do this purpose. Erase some part of the black gradation on the twigs, grass and little bird on the right. Set it to normal and reduce its opacity to 40%.

Step 29 (Setting Overal mode)

Again, create another new layer. Paint some color on this new layer as shown in the illustration below. Set this layer to overlay at 100% opacity.

Now create again a new layer. Fill this layer (Shift+F5) with blue. Mask parts of this blue layer on the main birds and edge of the tree. Set this layer to overlay at 40% opacity.

Create one more new layer on which we will paint gradation color of #f87e02. Set this layer to overlay at low opacity (13%). Finally, to finish this work, go to layer > new adjustment layer > levels. Just simply click Auto for the levels.

Step 1

Start by creating 1416×1416 px image. These are dimensions of cd cover.

Step 2

Paste “Dark clouds ahead” stock

Step 3

Add new adjustments layer (menu Layer > New adjustment Layer) with brightness/contrast. Set it:

Now background is too dark. For fix it you should draw mask. Choose mask layer, beside adjustment. Take a 360px soft, rounded brush and draw gently by right side of picture. My results of masking

How should it looks:

Step 4

Still background isn’t well. Add new adjustments layer with brightness/contrast. Set it:

Step 5

Now you should add some lights on background. Add new layer. With the same brush and #f46307 color draw, where you want to show lights.

Then you should blur it. Choose from menu Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur. Set 125px.

Change this layer mode to Soft Light and change opacity to 80%. Yay, you are awesome! :)

Step 6

It’s time to model! Paste “A slow fall stock” and mask it.

Step 7 – drapery

But what with this awesome silk material? Here’s the trick! Choose 38 px soft brush and change opacity of it to 40%. Then draw gently on lighter parts of material, but remember: try to use different opacity and size. On folds, opacity should be smaller.

Step 8

Now prepare model to particles. With Rough round bristle black brush on mask draw some on the edge of material.

Results for this moment:

Step 9

On layer with model add adjustment layer with color balance. (Right Click on Adjustment layer > Create clipping mask)

At adjustment layer draw mask. Orange light goes from right side of picture. Follow this tip :). My mask:

Below this, draw with #84664c 1px soft brush.

Step 30

On arm and hand draw with the same brush #676466 color lights.

Step 31

Then stroke a little further.

Step 32

Add layer. Again with the same brush, #3e4147 color, draw lights on drapery.

Step 33

Change color to #dc821c and draw orange lights on drapery.

Step 34 – hair

Add new layer. Now it’s time to make hair. Try using long strokes, by taking colors from original hair. I used #726f70, #7a614c, #b39264, #bda078, #1e130f.

Step 35

On new layer, draw #ff9b27 strands. It will be looking like lights from wings.

Step 36

Add layer. Take soft big brush (40px) #290f00 color. Draw some strokes on model’s face and hair. Then change blending mode to multiply.

Step 37

Again you should work on glow. Choose 100px brush #f7941d color (60% opacity) and draw strokes on wings and model’s skin, then change blending mode to linear dodge

Step 38

You will take care about wing’s particles. Choose #f7941d color, Rough round bristles brush and draw on the wings.

On this layer click RMB and choose Blending options. Choose outer glow.

Step 39

Add new layer and draw some strokes. I used 715px wide brush, #0054a6, #5674b9, #170a4a, #f39b0f. Then blur it (Filter > Gaussian blur: 250px).

Step 40

Then change blending mode to Soft light and opacity to 60%.

Step 41 – optional

You should change saturation of picture. Add adjustment layer (without clipping) > hue/saturation.

Step 42 – final

On adjustment layer mask, where is model.

Step 43
